The European Union, Japan, United States, France and abroad have found that problems in the workplace are escalating. Job stress carries a price tag for U.S. industry estimated at over $300 billion annually as a result of:

Accidents

Absenteeism

Employee turnover

Diminished productivity

Direct medical, legal, and insurance costs

Workers’ compensation awards as well as tort and FELA judgments

Pressure may come from the top down but the workers threaten the entire business due to stress related cracks in the foundation. So how do you, whether you are a manager or a worker, stay on … Read the rest

She was able to see how this caused an increase in errors in judgment and reduced morale as staff complained about the pressure. She also noted that the use of sick days increased.

What is a manager to do when the signs are obvious that pressure no longer improves performance and is in fact hindering it. Here are 7 things a manager can do to make a difference for their employees:

Make sure your staff know their work is valuable. Help them to connect what they are doing with the company’s overall goals and mission. Most people find great satisfaction when they engage in something meaningful.

Keep a check on your own stress. When you begin to see everything as urgent and convey
… Read the rest

Crave sugar. Desserts spelled backward spell stressed! Sure you are on the go, not a moment to yourself and that Chocolate Mocha Latte with whipped cream would be a nice treat, after all you deserve it! Yes, you do deserve to have what you want but my question to you is this, “what you really want?”

Will this treat help you achieve your goals? Will it help you reduce stress? In reality this sugar binge is only going to make it worse as you crash later and need to have something else to eat in the afternoon to pick you up. The cycle feeds on itself as your blood sugar drops, setting up cravings and before long your mind believes this “treat” is the only thing that will help you to feel better.

Been there done that? When does the guilt set in … Read the rest

Maybe you get stuck in the thought process of getting it just right – because maybe then everything will work out? Perfectionism is not the same thing as wanting to have your project, program, cake or yourself as good as you can be. Perfectionism is something more. It is compulsive doing, wrapped up in alot of harmful, destructive self criticism. Have you ever noticed that trying too hard actually gets in the way? Not to mention that with all that pressure, it takes the fun out of what you are doing! And if you are not enjoying what you are doing why bother? Yes, life was intended to be fun! It is all in the attitude.

This is not about you changing your thoughts or your desire to make “it” perfect or to not want to “be perfect.” It is about having new thoughts, big … Read the rest

In my nursing career I worked at Sheppard Pratt Hospital, at the time a leading Mental Health Institution. One thing I noticed (having come out of the Intensive Care Unit where decisions were made fast and usually in emergency situations) was that in this psychiatric hospital, everything was talked about and talked about and talked about some more. This was also back in the day when you stayed in a hospital for months. There was lots of time to talk.

It occurred to me that chronic stress often sets up this pattern of talking about problems ad nauseum or overthinking everything. Chronic stress can breed insecurity from not feeling like you accomplish enough to keeping things at such a fast pace that talking about problems may be your attempt to slow things down. When you find yourself stuck on your problems or overthinking everything give yourself 2 minutes to “talk … Read the rest

Do you talk about what’s wrong without considering what may be going well? Or do you know someone who does this? Chronic stress sets you up for negative and limited thinking. This is one of the ways people tend to keep their stress alive! Stress changes normal and the urgency and and sense of doom can feel so real when you have alot on your plate and do not feel you have the time to get it all done. Complaining actually weakens your energy and often the energy of those around you. This perpetuates the belief that what ever is going on is bigger than you are so why bother? It may also turn people away who may be keen on helping you but don’t want to go down into despair with you!

Here is your FREE meditation. Give yourself 5 to 15 minutes. Turn your … Read the rest

It is also a time to come full circle back to the most vital part of you. Ok, yes everything is changing; your body does not feel like yours anymore, your mind loses words, forgets names and your spirit can feel defeated. This is a time in life when personal and professional changes are going on at the same time your body is in hormonal flux. Talk about creating insecurity!

While life is not going to stop and let you off the treadmill to figure it all out, you can recognize that this time is a major milestone for you. It is necessary to take the time to tune in and turn within to understand what is really going on.

Let’s talk about your spirit. While your hormones are winding down and there is a lack of energy, interest in nurturing and loss of motivation, to a degree, this is by design! Yes, this time is one of great importance as a woman and your spirit wants you to go within and explore.

This is usually the half way mark and time to shift away from an “other” orientation to
one of “it’s my time.” The more aware you are of this natural change that is taking place within you, the better you can communicate to your family about what you need. They need time to realize you are not their personal attendant and to get on with their own development.
