How Aromatherapy Works

When essential oils are inhaled, the molecules are transported by way of the olfactory nerves through the nasal cavity to the limbic system. The limbic system influences other systems in the body and can be called the seat of your emotions. Ever had a smell of baking bread, coffee or perfume suddenly transport you back to a particular memory?

The limbic system is engaged in the stress response, responsible for motivation, emotions, mood, pain reflex, hormonal secretions (endocrine and autonomic nervous system is influenced by the limbic system) and is made up of the hypothalamus, amygdala (your fear response) and the hippocampus. Also in the this system is the olfactory bulb.

Inhaling essential oils is the more direct way to have oils enter the body even if it might seem that topical application would be. Essential oils enter your body directly through the nasal cavity and get right to work.

When essential oils are applied to the skin, they are absorbed and taken up by the bloodstream are transported to the organs and systems to do their healing work.

Whether inhaled or applied to the skin, therapeutic grade essential oils can do amazing things in the body. They are a great tool for Whole Personal health!
